Abu Dhabi Science Festival returns in November
More than 70 children's workshops and shows will be staged at Khalifa Park and Al Ain Zoo

Oct 16th 2017

One of the emirate’s most popular festivals dedicated to all natural things that pop, fizzle and crackle returns to a new location November 9-18.

The seventh edition of the Abu Dhabi Science Festival will be hosted at Khalifa Park, which organisers say offers more space — 500,000 square metres — to accommodate the growing number of children’s workshops and stage shows. The festival will simultaneously be held daily at the Al Ain Zoo.

“This year we have a very rich programme filled with exceptional interactive activities,” said Sanad Humaid Ahmed, vice-chairman of the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (Adek) innovation committee.

Children, who must be accompanied by an adult, will have the chance to engage with 71 hands-on activities and exhibits — including 40 that are being staged for the first time. Classic favourites — such as “Dig Up a Dinosaur,” which introduces youngsters to archaeology and “the Secret Life of Coral,” which teaches them about sea creatures — are also making a return appearance.

Adek director general Dr Ali Al Nuaimi said the festival has become an essential annual tradition to engage children with science.

“The festival, in its seventh annual year, has proven its success,” said Dr Al Nuaimi. “The number of participants are on the rise, the events are not just increasing in number, but are also increasing in diversity and in excitement. Its effects and its dimensions are of the utmost importance in helping to spark and ignite an interest in science, mathematics, engineering and technology in children.”

But the festival is not only for youngsters, he said, but also for parents who have a role to play in supporting children to pursue stem.

“We want every parent in the UAE to be someone who supports their children in order for the children to be innovative and inventive,” said Dr Al Nuaimi. “I think this is the real investment that will cause a major transformation in how we encourage science and technology for our children.”

There is a critical need for Emirati scientists and engineers, said Adel Albuainain, chief executive of Dolphin Energy, which is one of the sponsors.

“Our country needs experts in science and technology and mathematics and engineering to move us forward and to reach our goals,” said Mr Albuainain.

Regular tickets cost Dh10 for children and Dh5 for adults and can be purchased online at www.adsftickets.com. Fast-track tickets cost Dh50 for children and Dh40 for adults. A limited number of bookable workshops and shows are available for purchase online. The National UAE

'The Neptune Lounge features lavishly-costumed revues of West End musical favourites, as well as guest stars from the small screen and big stage. On my cruise the ‘Ministry of Rock’ production by the Balmoral Show Company was little short of ground-breaking for this cruise line. This show was edgy and the singers and dancers gave competent performances of great rock anthems. Special ‘Theme Nights’ – such as British Night; 60’s and 70’s Night; and Tropical Night bring their own magic – none more so than the Crew Show.' Gary Buchanan Cruise 118.com

'The entertainment was good. The Balmoral show Company were excellent and they worked hard throughout the cruise. We had a singer called Jon Moses, he had a beautiful voice. We had a comedian/magician Martin Daniels (son of the late Paul Daniels). Brenda Collins was from the North East she was a very funny lady and a couple of other acts.  www.cruise.co.uk Sail Date: July 2017

Band in the Neptune lounge (Fourth Dimension) were excellent, as were the Rosario trio (classical).' Fred Olsen Website, Review: May 27th 2017

'The evening entertainment was excellent. This cruise saw the arrival of a new showteam who were superb and performed some fantastic shows, it was hard to believe that they had only just joined the ship and were in their set up period. The Neptune lounge and the Morning Light pub benefited from a new sound system.' Fred Olsen Website, Review: May 25th

'The entertainment and Activities provided on board was phenomenal. Fantastic staff and incredible shows every night to end the day on a good note. The Balmoral Show Company, who were new to the cruise were amazing and had incredible voices. Barnaby (the ship comedian) was very funny and Matt Cairnes (another vocalist) was fab too. 4th Dimension, who played in the Lido Lounge every night, were great and always got the crowd up dancing of an evening.' UK’s Ministry of Science team returns to Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI, 12th March, 2017 (WAM) -- The Abu Dhabi Festival has welcomed the UK’s Ministry of Science to Abu Dhabi for the third year, with the company’s latest show, ‘The World is One Classroom’ which featured two performances at the Abu Dhabi Theatre.

In ‘The World is One Classroom’, the Ministry of Science explored scientific phenomena. 'Ministry of Science Live to Delight Residents'

SHARJAH: The UK's famous 'Ministry of Science Live' is coming to Sharjah with a brand new show and some bizarre new experiments to spread the word that physics is fantastic, chemistry is crazy and that every child has the chance to become a life-changing scientist.

Under the theme 'The world is one classroom', many elements of the 60-minute production range from the traditional science subjects such as weight, speed and gravity to the truly outlandish, including fire tornadoes, elephants' toothpaste, the future of travel and exploding ping pong balls. 'The world is one classroom' will also illustrate how inventors, engineers and scientists have shaped the modern world we live in and how the children themselves can be the spark that ignites a new way of working or living.

The show, being held at Masrah Al Qasba Theatre from Feb.21-23, is ultimately aimed at making science educational, accessible and entertaining to children, helping them to associate the subject with a positive mindset rather than a nervous attitude to a class which can seem ominous to many students.

It is the first time the 'Ministry' will have been to Sharjah, bringing the message to both parents and students that science progress is a global movement and that everybody can contribute to the future development of the world - irrespective of race, gender, religion or location.

Sultan Shattaf, Manager of Al Qasba, Sharjah's premier leisure, tourism and family destination, said: "We are delighted to host such a dynamic show. It's a great addition to our portfolio as we continue to draw more global events and entertainment." The Gulf Today 20th Feb 2017

Sharjah 24: The 'Ministry of Science Live' has concluded its run of famous scientific shows to a host of Sharjah school children and members of the public with a series of extravagant new experiments and demonstrations to demystify the finer points of science.

Under the theme 'The World is one Classroom', the show demonstrated that anyone can become a life-changing scientist, regardless of race, gender, or location and showed how many of science's most famous figures came from a diverse range of backgrounds. The 60-minute interactive production included a variety of carefully engineered explosive experiments  and chemical reactions, with constant audience participation.

Some of the more unusual operations included fire tornados, elephants' toothpaste, the future of travel and exploding ping pong balls. And using subjects as diverse as human rockets, liquid nitrogen and renewable energy, 'The World is One Classroom' also showed how science plays a part in our daily lives, making it accessible, relevant and fun for the children.

The show, which was held at Al Qasba from February 21-23, was hailed as a great success. As morning shows were especially dedicated to schools, and evening shows on the following days at 7:00 pm were for public.

Sultan Shattaf, Manager of Al Qasba, Sharjah's premier leisure, tourism and family destination, said: "The Ministry of Science Live is an excellent example of how international acts now choose to come to Sharjah in general and Al Qasba in particular for their appearances. For the organisers it is a natural choice to attract a wide and varied audience and for our citizens, residents and visitors, it is an opportunity to watch globally acclaimed productions. With each new performance that comes to Al Qasba, the greater our presence on the cultural, intellectual and educational stage. Through educational events and shows we host or organize, we want to be key players in the new generation's learning experience."

Al Qasba is home to a range of world-class facilities and tourist attractions, including restaurants and cafes, the Kids Fun Zone, the Al Qasba Musical Fountain, the Eye of the Emirates Wheel, the Maraya Art Centre and two libraries, among other amenities designed to meet the needs of visitors of all ages and from all communities. Fun science show captivates students in Sharjah
UK's famous 'Ministry of Science Live' show at Qasba theatre till Thursday

Sharjah: Exciting explosive experiments at the first UK 'Ministry of Science Live' show in Sharjah captivated hundreds of students and their families on Tuesday.

The show, currently under way at Masrah Al Qasba theatre, showed students how the subject of science is fun and should be enjoyed rather than feared.

Held under the theme 'The World is One Classroom,' the 60-minute production unmasked many of the mysteries of science through simple but captivating experiments that included fiery tornadoes, exploding ping pong balls and a CO2 fire extinguisher-powered spinning chair.

The show saw presenters throw beach balls into the audience while dropping a bowling ball onto the stage to show the concepts of mass and weight. They also set balloons full of hydrogen and oxygen alight to reveal how gases support combustion and created a mini volcanic eruption by mixing volatile chemicals.

All of the experiments were undertaken with proper safety precautions.

The opening show saw more than 200 youngsters from Sharjah's Australian International School and other audience members, with the children excitedly interacting with the presenters who aimed to inspire their young minds to embrace the world of physics, geology, chemistry, astronomy and other scientific disciplines.

Sultan Shattaf, Manager of Al Qasba, said the show "is the perfect blend of entertainment and education, making the subject of science enjoyable through aurally and visually exciting explosive experiments and how the universe works".

He said the show is aimed at engaging with children's minds and encouraging them to learn and develop through the medium of fun.
Organisers said the show proved to be a highly interactive production that carried a central message that any child can become a great scientist, regardless of their race, gender or religion.

The Ministry of Science Live draws heavily on the inspiration of such scientific luminary figures as Neil Armstrong, Isaac Newton, Leonardo da Vinci, Marie Curie and Alexander Fleming as it interacts with its young audiences.

The final performance of the hour long show for the general public is on Thursday, at 7pm, with seats priced at Dh50. Tickets can be purchased from the Al Qasba information desk and further information about the show can be found at the website: http://www.alqasba.ae. Gulf News Society 22nd Feb 2017

2015/2016 Jack & The Beanstalk Christmas & New Year Pantomime

Jack and the Beanstalk Raises Thousands for Charity

Monday 25th January 2016

'We are excited to confirm that the cast of the Jack and the Beanstalk Pantomime which ran throughout December at Blackfriars Theatre have raised £2328.32 for the Pilgrim Hospital's Children's Ward.

Throughout the Pantomime season the cast members of Jack and the Beanstalk took it upon themselves to run down to the foyer after every performance with collection buckets and ask the audience to make a donation for Boston Pilgrim Hospital's Children's Ward and they have raised a whopping £2328.32 - almost double the amount that was raised last year during the season of Dick Whittington.  Silly Billy and the rest of the cast along with David Grant from Blackfriars presented the amount to the ward sister Margaret Goodley on stage at the end of the season.

Thank you to everyone that attended the Pantomime and all those that donated, we hope you enjoyed the show and we look forward to seeing you again next year for Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood!'

Cast: Sasha Jacques Jack Trott, Jill, Dame Trott, Silly Billy, Fleshcreep, Fairy Dairy, King, Giant Blunderbore, Daisy, Old Woman/Ghost, Boston Babes, Senior Dancers.

Pantomime is back with a bang this year at the Blackfriars Theatre in the form of JACK AND THE BEANSTALK.

This traditional panto is a mix of myrth, mayhem and misunderstanding as Jack triumphs over the evil Giant Blunderbore.  With full supporting cast, glittering costumes and not forgetting the wonderful BOSTON BABES,
this promises to be an unmissable treat for all the family.

One of the best loved pantomimes, it tells the story of Jack and his mother Dame Trott and their battle with the evil Giant Blunderbore. Fleshcreep, the Giants Henchman forces Dame Trott to sell Daisy the Cow to raise money for rent. Jack takes Daisy to market, however, on the way Jack exchanges Daisy for a handful of beans which turn out to be magic. There follows a series of adventures as Jack climbs the beanstalk to cloudland to rescue Jill from the Giants clutches, needless to say Jack overcomes Blunderbore and saves the day.

Jack and the Beanstalk raises the roof!

Wednesday 30th December

Blackfriars Theatre's Annual Pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk has been a hit with packed houses of young and old.

After a fantastic season last year with Dick Whittington the Tony Peers Production Team are back with the classic story - Jack and the Beanstalk. Their return to Boston brings with it the ever popular Mike Carnell (Idle Jack) this time playing, you guessed it, Silly Billy. Oh no he isn't we here you shout, Oh yes he is and the children love him. Even the Mums and Dads are won over by his boyish charm and endless energy, one audience member said "He's such a Cheeky Chappy but he gets away with it" which is exactly how it should be.  King Ethelred played by Glenn Ford is your typical bumbling fool and Dame Trott, Silly Billy and Jack's Mum is brought to life by the talented Ian Moore, whose larger than life character interacts with the audience in true Dame style - never a dull moment when these two are on stage!!!

The show moves effortlessly through the story of good and bad with extremely well chosen songs performed superbly by the brilliant cast including Sasha Jacques as Jack and Katie Rodway as Jill his girlfriend and assisted by the hard working backstage crew.  All supported by this years 'Boston Babes' who dance their way through the show with wonderful choreography by our own Abi Kingsley-Parker. As with all true panto there is a baddy and Guy Mott as Fleshcreep causes the audience to raise the roof with their Boo's whilst the beautiful fairy, Rebecca Fenwick, promises good will prevail and produces her 'very special wand'.... we won't spoil it for you.  This traditional panto is a mix of myrth, mayhem and misunderstanding as Jack triumphs over the evil Giant Blunderbore. So come along and Boo or Cheer the Good the Bad and the Ugly.

As they did last year, the cast of Jack and the Beanstalk have decided to continue their support for the Pilgrim Hospital's Children's ward and are taking a collection for this worthy cause after each performance. During their time off between performances the lead characters jumped into a Taxi courtesy of Star Taxi's and headed down to the Children's Ward to surprise the children. They bounced around the ward for an hour or so bringing smiles to the children's faces before heading back to the Theatre to prepare for the evening performance.

The season runs through until the 3rd of January so make sure you don't miss out on this hilariously funny show, suitable for children and adults, everyone loves a Pantomime.

Jack and The Beanstalk Pantomime 2015

Sasha Jacques is Principal Boy Jack.

A high energy mix of singing, dancing and comedy, coupled with spectacular scenery and costumes make this a Christmas treat for all the family. Starring the fabulous IAN MOORE as Dame Trott and returning by public demand is MIKE CARNELL as Silly Billy.

Black light/UV puppets

Black light puppetry is an illusion making the audience believe that the puppet is moving without the aid of a manipulator. UV lighting is placed above the stage and reflects off the UV clothing in front of a black background. Controlling the puppet are the puppeteers dressed typically in black in front of the black background, camouflaged from view. This can give a really interesting effect as for example you can make objects look like they are flying in mid air. This type of illusion/trick has been used in film, television and theatre productions.

This same style of puppetry was used in the 80s movie 'The Labyrinth'. There is a scene consisting of an array of fantasy jungle creatures that dance around knocking off each others heads. To make this possible they used what is now known as chroma key and the puppeteers where hidden against the matching background.

Most famous for his use of puppetry is Jim Henson. A master of his craft, Henson created the idea for the Muppets and designed most of the characters for the famous show. These characters were made out of different forms of fabric mainly felt or rubber felt, which meant that the puppets were easy to create and to control.

The Thomson Group has its own showcase group who travel, and they were absolutely fantastic. One night they did an act called One Fine Day...60's/70's show tunes with acting in between, then another night they did The Decades act...they were absolutely amazing! I would have paid good money to watch them, and they were definitely my favourite act.'

2011 The Wind In The Willows Musical UK Tour

12th Sep 2010 - Feb

Sasha performs as Moley and other characters in a Musical performance of Wind in the Willows. Image Musical Theatre Company

Cast: Moley Sasha Jacques, Toad, Ratty

This vibrant musical production has all of Kenneth Graham's Tales of the River Bank, the Open Road, the Wild Wood, the exuberant Mr Toad and Mole, Ratty and Badger. Beautifully written, played and produced, this show in Image Musical Theatre’s immensely popular format, gives the opportunity for everyone to take part. Some children play the rabbits, the ducks and the thieving weasels while the whole audience learns the chorus of four songs.

The production is aimed specifically at children aged 5 and above, and will feature a large amount of audience participation - giving children the chance to get involved!

The Image Musical Company specialises in the adaptation of classics for schools, here they tell Kenneth Grahame's classic tale of English animals by the river bank, and the adventures shared by Ratty, Mole, Badger and friends.

During a half hour rehearsal workshop, children are picked from the audience to take part in the theatre production taking parts as rabbits, ducks and weasels. The rest of the audience are taught songs whilst the children rehearse - then in an interval everyone is costumed ready for the play!

Reviews

'We Were Toad-ally Entertained! The Prep School welcomed the Image Musical Theatre to school yesterday when they performed the ever popular children’s classic, Wind in the Willows. With a number of children chosen to help out, we managed to recreate the story in an hour long show. Those who were not actually on stage all learnt the words and actions to four songs and were a vital part of the performance, singing their hearts out when called upon.

With this week’s theme being ‘working together’, we were amazed at how Dimitri, Stephen and Sasha managed to work together so effectively to bring the play to life. The set, costumes and presentation were fantastic and the children and staff were thoroughly entertained throughout the afternoon, especially with the antics of a larger than life Toad!' 'Hey guys i saw u doin the wind in the willows awesome. Hey dimitri its ur friend who was makin ur friend laugh.' Reviewed by: Jai Grant Facebook, February 3, 2011

'The children very much enjoyed today's exciting, creative and imaginative production. They came back to class enthused by the colourful settings, the great scenery and wonderful songs. They really enjoyed the opportunity to rehearse and collaborate in a dramatic production.' Facebook Image Musical Theatre Company
